NEW DELHI: If you thought India was only a cricket-crazy country, then you might want to think again. The strong turnout at the regional round of the National Sudoku Championships — organised by Quixy and presented by The Times of India in association with the World Puzzle Federation — on Sunday proved that Sudoku has caught up with the other most popular sport in India.
          As many as 10,000 entries were received after the championships were announced a month ago in The Times of India. Almost 5,000 entries bore correct answers but keeping in mind the format of the World Puzzle Federation, only 1,200 players could be invited for Sunday's round. The competition began at 9 am. Stamford man wins in national Sudoku contest
Osher, a Stamford resident collected a $5,000 check for top spot in the intermediate category at the first Philadelphia Inquirer Sudoku National Championship held Oct. 19 through 21.
It was a challenging event in front of hundreds of fans gathered at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, but an organized, quick-thinking mind is key to solving the Sudoku challenge, said Osher.
"At the end of the day it's all about logic," he said of the puzzle which has captivated tens of millions of people.
Thomas Snyder, 27, a post-doctoral student in bio-engineering at Stanford University, picked up $10,000 and a trip to India for the world championships, after winning the advanced category.
Osher is chief operating officer of Melissa & Doug, a Wilton-based manufacturer of educational toys and children's products.For Details
